I have spent the last month pouring over the “Good to Great” book by Jim Collins. I study it like one would study the Bible pulling out bits of meaning, defining it and apply it to my life. I have read other commentaries on it some of which don’t believe the hype of the companies that were picked as some have since failed or fallen from the stock market grace. Whatever the reason for that point of view and believe me they have their points it doesn’t discount what these companies were able to do.
Jim Collins and his researchers really nail down what I think are the greatest components that every company should strive to be.
I found this great quote and it’s perfect for your new year’s resolutions! These are not goals these are just concepts that every business and individual should be using to measure what they want out of this life. If you do these small things, it will be amplified and will move you from Good to Great!
“The start of the New Year is a perfect time to start a stop doing list and to make this the cornerstone of your New Year resolutions, be it for your company, your family, or yourself. It also is a perfect time to clarify your three circles, mirroring at a personal level the three questions…
1) What are you deeply passionate about?
2) What are you are genetically encoded for — what activities do you feel you are just “made to do”?
3) What makes economic sense — what can you make a living at?
“Those fortunate enough to find or create a practical intersection of the three circles have the basis for a great work life.” ~Jim Collins
Instead of adding things to do, decide on what not to do and stick with a more focused approach. Look over your year and decide when you had the most fun doing what you do. Was it profitable? Was it “YOU”? Now go do that and nothing else because that’s what a great individual and company would do.
Happy New Year!
