I know you have heard of it. It’s a dark shadow hanging out in the corners of every company. Have you thought about how to be more creative but too scared to mention it because maybe if you step outside of the lines you will either go to jail or lose all self-respect.
Creative Accounting
Creative accounting in the past was dubbed for small backrooms in restaurants where the mob bosses came together to count the money and “cooked the books”. Very skilled accountants were used in elaborate schemes to launder money or hide money from the government authorities to evade taxes. Most of the gangsters were caught not for the illegal acts that they participated in but for tax evasion and fraud.
Seriously, that’s scary stuff and I don’t want any part of this.
When we talk about being creative in the accounting field it is so much more about structure and process than about the actually numbers.
Let’s define it.
cre·a·tive
krēˈātiv/
adjective
- 1.
- relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.
- “change unleashes people’s creative energy”
noun
informal
- 1.
- a person who is creative, typically in a professional context.
As you can tell I am on a kick to understand what specific words mean and making sure that I am using them correctly, call that my accounting self-making its mark on my creative self.
Creativity is taking an original idea and releasing your imagination over it. In our case it could be how we structure a company to how we design an accounting system. The design is determined by the goals but as you know there are a million ways to get from point A to B. We help you decide which is the best path based upon experience and understanding the big picture.
Being creative in accounting is a learned skill that requires us to be continually learning and pushing to the next level. There is no status quo if you want to be a leader in your industry.
One last thought on this definition of creative. If you describe yourself as a “creative” type it means that professionally your skill is to be creative in nature. You could be a creative company who designs stuff like buildings or web pages but for sure you need to have the creative brain to do your job.
In the past I didn’t really want to call myself a creative accounting firm because of all the misunderstood uses of this term. The more I grow up into the professional I realize how important it is for me to be creative for my own business and for all the others that we serve.
