Apollo 11 Crew: Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin

On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 and 3 very brave astronauts set foot on the moon. This amazing feat took years of planning and although there were plenty of na-sayers they did it.  They changed the world.

As a business person our hope is to strike out and discover new ground, put a stake into new territory or get a big idea. All business is created with a the intention of creating something new. Every business owner believes this to be true.

So how do we get these grand ideas? How do we stake out new territories?

First start with a pain point of your current customers and common complaint. From there look for solutions to these problems and see if it’s an additional service or add-on service that would become part of what you already offer.

Second, look for new ways of delivering the product or service. In the world of internet and web-based products like Go-To-Meeting, working and serving customers can all be done virtually. Web-based products are on the rise and everything has become accessible online. Why not see how you can try to incorporate so ideas into what you normally do?

Steve Job’s is quoted to say that “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.”

You don’t have to put a man on the moon to necessarily change the world we all live in. It can be a simple concept, connected to another simple concept and before you know it a brilliant new idea is born. Simplicity is the best innovation and less is more.

How do you come up with new ideas? How do you change the world?
